In the upcoming early Spring in New York, Oever is taking the first Cultural Heritage Festival to David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center. From January 14th to 19th, New York audience will have the chance to view a newly arranged Peking opera program by the most esteemed Peking opera masters. Accompanying the live performance there will be a themed marketplace. Curated with artists, artisans, and indigenous craftsmen, the marketplace exhibits cultural heritage in the form of tangible objects and interactive workshops. The junior artists from the touring troupe will also participate in a series of local interviews and lectures to share the behind-the-scenes stories.
The program of the Peking opera performance features four classic plays from the most renowned repertoire: Uproar in Heaven, adapted from Journey to the West, Jinshan Temple, a scene based off Legend of the White Snake, Farewell my Concubine, and Three Times Stealing the Nine-Dragon Goblet. The comprehensive repertoire is the epitome of the Peking opera performance, and it exemplifies Peking opera’s interpretation on themes including romance, loyalty, rebellion, heroism, and chivalry. With captivating narrative and intricate performance aesthetics, the live performance will exhibit the unique charm of Peking opera.
The live performance is an Oever production in collaboration with Tianjin Peking Opera Theater, Tianjin Youth Peking Opera Troupe and Tianjin Art Vocational College. The production is a new arrangement of the classic repertoire, emphasizing the martial elements and incorporating immersive, digital stage design. Performance features artist Xiaoliang Shi, winner of Plum Performance Award, and Xiujun Zhao, director at Tianjin Peking Opera Theater and Plum Performance Award winner.
Throughout the Cultural Heritage Festival, the touring troupe will also go beyond the David Koch Theater and into culture centers, United Nations, and universities to share the behind-the-scenes stories as ambassadors for Peking Opera. Lectures by Peking Opera masters will be held at New York University and Columbia University, while for the young generation, the junior artists from the touring troupe will join the interactive workshop to share their understanding of reviving and passing on the cultural heritage.
During the Cultural Heritage Festival, alongside the live performances there will be a themed marketplace of art crafts and intangible cultural heritage showcasing. Artists and artisans will be at the marketplace, presenting their collectible art crafts including lacquerware, round fan, enamel, and Beijing embroidery. Intangible cultural heritage artists will also perform at the marketplace, showcasing tea art and dough sculpture. Audience will have a chance to join the interactive workshops and experience the making of Peking opera or try on Han-style clothing.
